Garvin Residence – Custom Metal & Millwork
Encino, CA · 2019 · Custom Metal & Millwork
A residential remodel in Encino, anchored by two custom-fabricated elements — an exterior deck guardrail and an interior entry screen — each resolving a threshold moment in the home through material and detail.
The exterior guardrail was designed as a perforated metal panel system, with fin balusters and a custom fascia plate assembly resolving the attachment to the existing deck structure. The perforation pattern and fin detail give the railing a material depth that reads differently as light conditions change throughout the day.
The interior stair screen addresses the entry threshold between the main level and staircase — a full-height wood fin partition, flush-mounted to floor and ceiling. The rhythm of the fins creates a filtered boundary rather than a hard wall, maintaining visual connection while defining the space.
The wood fin screen was fabricated by Farmhouse Custom Cabinetry. The perforated metal guardrail and all associated metalwork were fabricated by Fernando Soto. Both elements were developed through detailed fabrication drawings, including elevations, sections, and connection details.
Additional scope included full cabinetry documentation for the kitchen, AV/media wall, office built-ins, children’s room, and master bath — coordinated with Farmhouse Custom Cabinetry and IKEA/Semihandmade.
